First Time To Counseling?

If this is your first time coming to counseling, making the decision to seek counseling services may seem overwhelming, and understandably you may have some questions about what to expect during your first session.

My priority is to create a space for you that is safe and inviting, and the objective of the first session is to do just that. We will review the paperwork, including the intake form, my practice policies, financial form, and the HIPAA document that you will bring with you to the first session, and I will take time to answer any questions that you have regarding any of these documents. Once all of your questions have been answered, we will then spend the session getting to know one another.

I’ll ask you about your reasons for seeking treatment, what your goals or expectations are, and what you are looking for in a counselor. I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have for me regarding my counseling style, what you can expect from me regarding your treatment, and any pertinent information that can help you make an informed decision of whether or not I am the best counselor for your needs.

As I mentioned earlier, I strive to create a space for you to feel welcome and to feel safe. The first session will allow you to be able to make an informed decision of whether or not I will be able to meet your counseling needs. While I strive to provide the best counseling services available, I understand that sometimes I might not be the best professional fit for what someone needs, and that is completely okay. If, at the end of the session, you feel that I cannot meet your needs, please let me know and I will be happy to work with you to identify a referral that may be a better fit.

If you decide to continue services with me, then at the end of the session we will schedule your next session and begin working on your goals for treatment. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to contact me and I will gladly answer them for you.
